summer fun

since summer is just starting i hate to hear my kids say they are bored already! so yesterday i put them to work. we had some REALLY OLD bananas and i had them make banana bread. all i did was pull the stuff off of the shelves they couldn't reach and put the bread in the oven. they did the rest all by themselves.

then to be super ambitious i had them make their own butter!! we had some heavy cream left over from father's day dinner. use a glass jar with a tight lid. i like glass because they can see it turning into butter.
pour the cream but leave enough space so it can be shaken and have some room to move around. (if you want to you can add some salt. i didn't but have before)

then start shaking. they shook and shook and shook. big c said they tossed it to each other but i didn't see that. after a good 30 minutes it should start to come together. (it may take longer, depending on how hard they shake it)
drain off any liquid. we usually just keep it in the jar and scrape some of it out when we want some. it's not like regular butter where it spreads smoothly so be warned. but it tastes amazing!! and boy is it good on homemade banana bread!

Yum! I finished all of my work but my mom won't let me come because she said she wanted me to help get ready for her party. :(

My kids love making butter, and I love how busy it keeps them. =)

you amaze me. i would have had NO idea how to make butter (except for the old fashioned way of going to the store....). i love that you pass that on to the boys. they're gonna make great boyfriends/husbands one day. knowing how to cook is a big turn on to a girl.

you could mail me a loaf of that bread if you wanted....

Banana bread sounds good. I didn't know butter could be made that way. Interesting.

Super Fun activity to keep the kids busy and learning something! We do the butter making and bread baking when we read Little House on the Prarie. (Books on tape save my life.)

Um TOTALLY making this! I love it! Can't wait for my giant bunch of bananas that hubby had to have and is not eating to go bad so we can make bread. Sophie is going to really love making the butter too.

want to hear something crazy??? I just saved a glass salsa jar last week and had no idea why I was keeping it as I was washing it out and taking off the label. weird.
who knew I would new a butter churning container??
