homeschooling at my house

this is what homeschooling looks like at my house
yesterday we started studying africa. i'm shocked at how much i don't know about stuff. and i'm a pretty smart cookie. we used a map and the internet and just had a great time. i did make him do some boring stuff like labeling a blank map but for the most part we had fun. and we learned about apartheid in south africa. man. what is wrong with people? i just can't understand why some folks think they have the right to dictate how others should live. boggles the mind. big c was floored to think stuff like that happens. really opened his eyes.

anyway if you were wondering about the WW pix yesterday, we were doing a project on viscosity. Viscosity is a measure of the resistance of a fluid to being deformed by either shear stress or extensional stress. It is commonly perceived as "thickness", or resistance to flow. Viscosity describes a fluid's internal resistance to flow and may be thought of as a measure of fluid friction. Thus, water is "thin", having a lower viscosity, while vegetable oil is "thick" having a higher viscosity. (wikipedia definition) and so if you add green food coloring and an army man you have a fun homeschooling project!! (we used corn syrup)

we finally had a semi-normal weekend. we are still trying to get back to a regular schedule after the death of my father-in-law.

saturday we got to sleep in! it's so nice that monkey is getting old enough to get up and not have to wake the whole house right away! hubby had to eventually go and get equipment for a show we were to play saturday night. it was a party for a 16 year old. they really picked the wrong band to play music for them! but we had a great time. the sound was really good, and the kids were ok with it. i mean for that age group a middle aged Christian rock band was probably not the best choice. we got paid!!! that was awesome. and it would have been perfect if i had not knocked over my mic stand in the middle of a song. oh my gosh. i was so embarrassed but to make it worse as i was trying to remedy the situation, my microphone got caught in tim's mic and tried to pull his over too!! we were both laughing so hard. and he had a harmonica in his mouth. anyway it was fun. and i was home by 10:00.

sunday church then i came home and plopped my butt down on the couch to read a book. it was My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. i could not put it down. and i didn't. until the end and i was sobbing like a baby. read it. it's amazing.

big c went home with blake to skateboard and monkey kept himself busy building legos all day. he came up to me with a skeleton lego guy that was attached to some building he made. there was a lego plant on it. he took the guy and said he is allergic to sweet and kind so i'm going to put him in the sweet and kind bush and he will be fine then. i love it when he says stuff like that!! oh and speaking of legos, today is there 50th anniversary. this is what google did. cool huh?

have you heard about what is going on over at manic mommy? she is having a contest to get people to donate blood. check it out.

the hardest part of giving blood for me was actually finding a blood drive that wasn't over an hour away. i mean i live in the biggest city in 3 states! finally i found one that was only about 20 minutes away. you go in and they ask you some questions, take your blood pressure and prick your finger to check your hemoglobin. you read all this stuff about giving blood and then you go to the CHAIR!! they were all sooo nice. and they loved the fact that there was a contest to encourage people to give blood. they all wanted to take my picture.
to me the finger prick actually hurt worse than the needle in the arm. and it only takes about 10 minues for them to get all they need. i did get a little woozy and they put a fan on me and brought me some juice. i felt like an Egyptian princess!! then i got to have more juice and cookies of my choice. (i had a little debbie oatmeal cookie!) and they gave me a big mesh bag, a calendar, and a lunch box!! and i got to register to be entered in another contest to win $500!! so if you haven't given blood and want to be entered in manic mommy's contest GO GIVE BLOOD TODAY!!!

i was run-ning!!

2 years ago i decided i wanted to start running. i belonged to a gym and found this great program on how to start. (duh you would think you just run, right?) it's an 8 week schedule that by the end of the 8 weeks you will be running 3 miles or 30 minutes straight. it was one of the hardest things i had ever done. i would get so excited after every run. yipee i had run 3 minutes without stopping. then hurray! i had run 5 minutes straight. until i did it. i ran 3 miles!! i was beside myself. i told everyone and just felt great. then i quit. just like that. no reason. just didn't want to do it anymore. it is hard you know!

well, my mom-in-law gave me her treadmill right after Christmas this year. and i started again. i'm now on my 3rd week. i'm so excited!! i just feel so powerful running. it's hard. and i'm much more out of shape then i was then. but i'm going to do it!! some day's (like yesterday!) i have to force myself to get up there and run. but i feel so good when i have finished.

keep me honest and ask often if i'm still on track.

i am going to be gone for a while. my father-in-law, paul, is in his last day's of his life. he has had lung cancer for a while and now it's the end. he has been more of a father to me than my own father so i am devastated. as are my husband and my 12 year old. the nurse came in today and said it could be any time. and i want to be available for my mother-in-law. don't think i have abandoned you. i will be back. if you are a praying person, please pray for my family and for my peggy my mother-in-law.

PAR-TY! PAR-TY! PAR-TY!!

saturday was big c's birthday party. i had 10 middle-schoolers here, including his girl friend. it has been cold so i was worried they were all going to be in the house the whole time. thank goodness we hit 50. pretty much from the time everyone arrived they stayed outside and skateboarded. i had 8 boys going up and down that quarter-pipe all afternoon. the 2 girls just sat and giggled at the boys. i called them in for cake and presents and they were back out the door again. some of the parents stayed and there were some siblings and grandma's so i think there were about 22 people. 4 of the boys stayed to spend the night. i made them come in about 7:30 to eat some pizza then they were back out again!! at 9:00 i told them they had to come in and get showers because i was taking them all to church the next morning. they hung out and watched some football (sorry about the steelers drew!) and then got into their sleeping bags to watch a movie. napoleon dynamite. :) they were up until midnight!! then up again at 7 to eat some eggs and go back out and skate until church. big c is still exhausted! but there were no injuries and really it was one of the best parties he has ever had. super fun!
